Atago officers' acquittal to be appealed

Yokohama

KYODO — Prosecutors are set to appeal the acquittal of two Maritime Self-Defense Force officers over a 2008 collision between an Aegis destroyer and a trawler that killed two fishermen, prosecution sources said Friday.

The Yokohama District Public Prosecutor's Office has until Wednesday to appeal the Yokohama District Court ruling, which didn't recognize negligence in the operations of the MSDF's Atago in its predawn collision with the Seitoku Maru.

The prosecutors sought two years in prison without labor for Lt. Comdrs. Tomohisa Nagaiwa, 37, and Keitaro Ushirogata, 38. Both were involved in lookout duties at the time the accident took place off Chiba Prefecture.
