Prime Minister Naoto Kan is considering reshuffling his Cabinet immediately after the Diet closes on June 22, with an eye to bolstering reconstruction in areas devastated on March 11, sources close to him and executives of the Democratic Party of Japan said Tuesday.
Kan is looking to create ministerial posts to take charge of the reconstruction and the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant. He also wants to reshuffle some of the executives in his ruling DPJ, they added.
Kan is likely seeking to secure his grip on power by switching the posts, observers said.
Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku is likely to be tapped as minister for reconstruction efforts, while Goshi Hosono, a special adviser, is likely to become minister in charge of the Fukushima nuclear emergency, the sources said.
The focus is also on whether the prime minister will offer DPJ lawmakers close to party heavyweight and nemesis Ichiro Ozawa, who has been critical of Kan's leadership, key government or party posts, observers said.
